About Us

In Memory

Joy Thomson, the longtime Church Administrator of the First Baptist Church of Hingham, started the Soldier’s Care Package ministry in 2005. It was her vision that brought this mission to life and she worked tirelessly to support our deployed soldiers by sending them food, personal care products, and entertainment items to brighten their lives. Sadly, Joy passed away in July of 2024 after a long battle with leukemia.

Throughout her tenure directing this mission, she set up a network of point leaders who conveyed their group’s most pressing needs. She then procured the items by soliciting donations of both cash and products from a network of donors. Joy and her husband Doug then coordinated the packing and mailing of packages to the soldiers.

This ministry started when thousands of soldiers were deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Since the inception of her ministry, the locations and the needs of the soldiers have changed but the mission has remained the same: to show support, bring comfort, and send needed items to our troops.

In order to honor Joy and the worthy cause she championed, we at First Baptist Church have decided to continue this mission with an expanded focus. Not only will we send packages to the deployed soldiers, but we will also work to supply our local veterans with food, clothing items, and other necessities.

We would like to thank all of our donors. Many have donated since Joy’s passing to honor her memory and, as she would have wished, this money has gone to the mission she started those 20 years ago. Rest in peace Joy.

About Us

Key Information

SoldiersCarePackages.com is a project of the First Baptist Church of Hingham, MA, a 501(c)(3) organization, and a 100% volunteer based operation that sends care packages to veterans and all military branches: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and National Guard.

Our care package initiative was founded in 2005 and has shipped more than 80,000+ lbs. to deployed troops.

The Packages

  • Care packages can contain toiletries, prepackaged food and snacks, entertainment items, and personal cards/letters.
  • Care packages must be addressed to an actual deployed individual.  We call such a person a “Point Leader.”  He/she receives our care packages and then distributes the contents to the entire unit.
  • We strive to send items that are requested by each troop. Circumstances and needs vary with each unit.
  • We will provide support as long as our units are deployed.

Financial/Supplies

  • Since we are based totally on volunteerism, all proceeds go directly to purchasing and mailing the items requested by our troop units.  There are no other expenses to cover. You can feel secure that 100% of your contribution is going exactly where you intend it to go.
  • We do not pay for fundraising campaigns or events.
